Creating a business that is fit for the future
We recognise that responsible production and creating homes fit for the future is essential for the success of our business and the quality communities we provide for our customers.
Acting on climate change
By building lower carbon homes, reducing climate-altering emissions from our operations, and working with our supply chain to do the same, we are acting on climate change every day.
Our carbon reduction targets are approved by the Science Based Targets initiative, ensuring that they will result in meaningful change in both the near and long-term. We know that reaching our net zero goals will be challenging but it is critical we set out a pathway to ensure our business is increasingly sustainable and fit for the future, delivering sustainable homes and communities for our customers and stakeholders. This is why responding to climate change, and assessing the risks and opportunities it presents, is a key pillar of our sustainability strategy.
Reducing waste
Tackling waste and the use of natural resources is the second pillar of our approach to becoming a sustainable business. We have created incentives to support the proper management of waste on our sites, achieving a 98% diversion from landfill rate for our waste, and a recycling rate for our production waste in excess of 85%. We know that the most important action we must take is to address the root cause of waste in our industry. Balancing availability of materials for our teams and reducing wastage rates and single-use items is challenging, but we have begun working with our supply chain to do just that. As well as contributing to our ambition to mitigate climate change, reducing resource use will also help us deliver benefits around our third pillar – Nature.
Supporting nature
Through biodiversity gain and our commitment to provide Homes for Nature on our sites we are helping to create habitat and support for insects, mammals and birds, including the threatened swift and the hedgehog. However, creating healthy local environments is just as important for our customers as for wildlife, with access to open and green spaces essential for mental and physical wellbeing. Beyond our local goals, we are committed to sourcing sustainable timber in our business and have improved how we provide evidence of this. Our actions to drive responsible production and tackle climate change support the protection of the environment, locally and globally.
